Health Issues

My Blog

Things go tits down!

I've been shocked to find out there are basic medical issues a lot of us will experience as we get to our 50's and beyond, that I had absolutely no idea about. Most of these seem to relate to having been pregnant and/or giving birth vaginally. As a large number of women will have been pregnant, it's fair to say there are many of us out there who need to be informed about what to expect, and to take any steps possible to avoid medical issues down the line.

One friend of mine complained of back pains for 2 years - always being told she'd just have to deal with it as aches and pains were a side-effect of the menopause. She stopped being able to excercise by the second year.  She then moved from France to America where, being more confident with the language she was able to say THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH well told yet again it was the menopause. She demanded further tests - which revealed a 10cm tumor in her spinal column. After being told to prepare for paralysis and undergoing 10 hours of surgery she woke to find she could walk and that she was going to be ok. But really, what the...?

So I say stand up for yourself and demand answers! And solutions. Perhaps you could help yourself prevent issues with alternative remedies or targeted exercise?

COMING SOON - 4 friends chat about the menopause & gyny issues
I've persuaded 3 good friends to come round and have a frank, honest chat at what aging has meant to them physically, how that's been exacerbated (or not) by the menopause, and what issues they're facing gynecologically now they're 50+

WHAT THE GREY IS GOING ON?!?!
Another thing that's happened to me is that my grey hair is coming through curly/wavy/frizzy! What's that about?? I've had poker straight hair all my life, so straight that any attempt to curl it would fall out within the hour, and now - my hair's got a mind of it's own!  I've had short hair for about the past 3 years, so had no idea what was happening as before that I hadn't got much grey. I decided to start growing it last year and, hey presto, it's curly! I didn't have a clue what was going on until the hairdresser explained that grey hair has a different consistency often than your regular hair - can be coarser, finer, more wiry, curlier - basically just different! And so as I gradually go greyer I imagine I'll gradually go curlier, and ultimately end up with an afro. Which would be a riot! In the meantime I'm enjoying the change and learning how to 'fix' it, getting into all sorts of new lotions and potions, experimenting in the hope that I'll work out how to make it look the same each day, rather than what's happening at the moment when each day is a surprise :-)

ITCHY & DRY
I don't know about you but my first signs change was a-coming came about through my skin. Suddenly I got itchy bit & dry bits. I tried my regular creams and it didn't help at all. I even got a weird thing on my scalp. After about 18 months of pretending nothing was wrong or annoying I eventually prioritised myself (!)  and went to see a dermatologist. She recommended I cut off the lump on my head - which freaked me out and I didn't do it. But she recommended a cream for my skin - Diprobase - which worked like a dream. Turned out my dad who had been given radiotherapy for prostate cancer was using the same product for the side affects he was having with his skin. So a great recommendation!

While I was wondering about getting something chopped off my head and not feeling too jolly about doing it, a friend mentioned trying T-gel hair shampoo to re-balance my head. Within two days of using it (and I'm not kidding) the lump began reducing and within five days was gone completely! So another great recommendation for anyone with any weird lumps on their heads.
